Heavy Mettle

24 hours left on a cover story. No, I am not procrastinating. At least not on purpose.

Guided By Voices Did a Lot of Songs From ‘Bee Thousand’ Tonight

My job has a few great perks.

Musical Time Machine

My friend Spanky saved a mixtape I made him 15 years ago. I still like all these songs from “lifetimes ago,” as Sunshine says.

Gang Badoy, Idol

Nakilala ko si Gang through an orgmate, about 15 years ago. Mostly my orgmate (who was also her boyfriend at the time) would just talk about her in awe, so I was always like, ‘Sino ba ‘tong Gang na to?’ Later on, I re-met her through Rock Ed. As she says in this interview, “The advocacy is not as static as you imagine it to…because when you ask questions, what you’re really saying is: You know what? This is my country, this is my business.” And now I know–si Gang has always been awe-inspiring.

Wanderlust

Could be the chillest festival I’ve ever been to. Stalked Adrian Grenier. Rode a gondola with the drummer from Spoon. Almost got thrown on stage at Girl Talk. Flew with acroyogas. Watched Amanda Palmer sing “Creep” on ukelele in her underwear beside a snow-making pond. GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!! Pictures to follow.

Support starving artists!

Last month, I saw this t-shirt, “Support Broke Rappers” worn by MCs everywhere. I love that thought (buy CD’s, go to shows, yo), but I’m so much more amazed that Margaret Stutt, better known in Milwaukee as the singer-songwriter/accordionist Pezzetino, has the chutzpah required to be proactive and take YouTube video requests to help fund her tour. You gotta admire this girl’s drive. Apparently she did this earlier to pay for her car repairs last month after it sustained wear and tear from touring as well. Request a song, then give her money here. You could be rewarded with a YouTube video of acapella goodness like the one below:

Bembang.Us

In June, I started a tri-city music blog with Araceli and Brian. As a freelancer (who used to work for major dailies), I still get loads of press releases for music. And there’s so much going on in Los Angeles that I felt it was a shame I didn’t have an outlet for everything I wanted to cover. I asked Araceli and Brian to help it was because I always enjoyed reading Brian’s blogs about Chicago music, and Araceli, who works at the Village Voice, is the hook-up meister for +1s in New York. All in all I thought it would be a pretty comprehensive site for things … that the three of us were interested in. Hehe.

lillearacelibrian

We called it Bembang! because we didn’t want a silly blog name. We resorted to choosing from my old (aborted) band names — we eventually picked BemBang! because in Filipino slang, it means this. It mutated to various noun forms (a dude who is ‘Bem’ is f*ckable, not necessarily cute, but is always hot; ‘Bembangan’ means the act of doing it). So that was fun, and funny.

Brian thought the URL was funny because I bought bembang.us; if you read it fast, you’d think it was “Bang Us.”

Anyway, it’s been kind of cool just seeing what Araceli and Brian have been up to in New York and Chicago. I really enjoy their writing as well. We haven’t put out any sort of mission statement or anything, but I’m sure we’ll figure all that out eventually. In the meantime, enjoy my favorite post so far.

I’m off to the yoga/music festival Wanderlust tomorrow at Lake Tahoe; not Los Angeles, but still the West Coast, so it counts, yes? So watch out for the review, up next week on BemBang!.

My talented gene pool

My cousin is in a TV series called Oblivion. We’re hoping it gets picked up so she can be famous and we can all live off her success.
